City in Lombardy and capital of the province. The city, whose name derives from Mantus, the Etruscan god of the underworld, was for centuries ruled by the Gonzaga family (from 1328-1708). During the eighteenth century it was part of the Habsburg empire. Mozart visited Mantua from 10-19 January 1770, where he gave a concert at the Reale Accademia di scienze, lettere ed arti on 16 January
